Halfway Through the 48
For these two friends from New Jersey, there’s a unique unit of measure that they use on New Hampshire peaks: How many Mt Tammanys is it? Mt Tammany is rocky training peak that they hike on close to home in New Jersey. Mt Carrigain, they said, including the mandatory road walk, is equivalent to about three and a half of them. They checked Carrigain off their list with an overnight trip this week.
I was portering as well as guiding, and I looked almost cartoonish with a 70-pound backpack that contained cool-weather camping gear for three, group gear, and a massive water carry to camp. We got decent weather and views from the fire tower, and one of the guests checked off her 24th peak of the 48 — meaning she’s now halfway to completion. —Debra
