Mike M Earns a WFR

Our newest Redline Guide Mike Maciel has been very hard at work as he develops as a mountain guide with Redline Guiding (not just a porter). This development happens in bits and pieces over time, with experience giving context. One of the major bits one needs to overcome is the required medical training. Specifically Mike earned the coveted Wilderness First Responder (WFR) patch from SOLO. For […]

Guides Do Good

They’re a tough crowd to keep up with, but we try. We love to write about some of the cool things our guides do when they’re not guiding or teaching. We also love to tout their certifications and technical accomplishments. For example, this summer Redline Guide Arlette Laan finished hiking the Pacific Northwest Trail. She then went on to complete a Direttissima (hiking all 48 4000-footers […]

Team in Training Hike

This past weekend we provided leadership to an important Team In Training event raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). We found ourselves doing this thanks to North Ridge Mountain Guides (NRMG) who sought us out for leadership assistance. (Mike and the owner there, Jamie, used to guide together and are friends.) The leadership provided came from Redline Guides Ken Hodges, Jeffrey Shutak, and […]

Significant Walking

We love sharing some of our guides’ more significant accomplishments. We’d love to write about all of their accomplishments, but it’d simply be too much work so we stick to the significant bits. And that’s why we’re writing here and now. With the accompaniment of her husband, Rich Gambale, Redline Guide Arlette Laan — whom we write about a lot due to all the cool stuff […]

Another First Responder

We love it when our guides increase their knowledge, making themselves better guides. Taking classes, for example, to earn their Wilderness First Responder (WFR) credentials. That’s what Redline Guide Cindy Zhou just did, earning her SOLO WFR (and renewing her CPR/AED in the process) through the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, which hosted the course. Congratulations Cindy! Earning your WFR is awesome! Well done!

Katie Vaughan Joins the Team

We are delighted to announce the newest addition to the Redline Guiding team: Katie Vaughan. We’ve known and respected Katie, as a leader with the AMC New Hampshire Chapter, for quite some time so we’re pleased she has interest and wanted to join our merry cast of hikers. What follows is a bit of an introduction: Katie lived in the Boston area growing up and moved […]

World’s Best Woofer

Being the “world’s best…” is what they say about newly minted Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and Wilderness First Aid (WFA) students as they walk out the door with their credentials in hand, minds brimming with the latest and greatest wilderness medical knowledge. The honor of the title doesn’t last as these are highly perishable skills to learn. We quickly tuck them away into our memories (we […]

Rachel Ryan Joins the Team

Although she came to us over a month ago, we are finally able to announce her joining on the team of Redline Guides. She had been busy after completing her thruhike of the Appalachian Trail (AT). Rachel is proudly born and raised in Ohio. As a lifelong Ohioian, Rachel first moved to New Hampshire in 2010 upon graduation from Allegheny College to do trail work with […]

Guides in Overdrive

We really like to share the cool things our guides do when they’re not out there guiding. And they do a lot. So much, in fact, it’s hard to keep up. We recently mentioned that Redline Guide Bill Robichaud just finished his Appalachian Trail thru-hike. And while our focus was on that piece, Arlette Laan finished hiking the New England Trail with her husband, Rich. Jeffrey […]

Fourteen States

Redline Guide Bill Robichaud went on a long walk. He began by hiking up a little mountain in Georgia on a hot April morning, then ending some four-and-a-half months later on Baxter Peak of Mt Katahdin in Maine. The trail? Why, it was the 2190-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail (better known as the AT), of course. And Bill took it on — as “Science Guy” (a […]

Cindy Zhou Joins the Team

New to our team of guides here at Redline Guiding is Cindy Zhou (pronounced schōh). Cindy comes to us from the city of Shenzhen in the southeastern part of China (see images below). It’s a busy, modern metropolis that links Hong Kong to China’s mainland. Similar to North Conway, it is known for its shopping destinations, but of course lacks our great mountains. If you’re thinking […]

Hiking the Cohos Trail

We love hearing about what our guides do off the clock as well as what they do when working, and we figure you might, too. We try to post their most significant accomplishments here for that reason. Because of this, and being that there are so many significant accomplishments happening in any given year, we stay busy documenting it all. And here we are again. This […]
