A fellow who came to us as a referral from past guest of ours wanted to become an official LNT Awareness Trainer. He wanted to be able to officially train others to the LNT Awareness level, such as the members of an AMC group down in Massachusetts he’s part of. While many of the guides here are Awareness Level Trainers, we’re not able to teach and certify this course. Fortunately we have one official LNT Master Trainer: Redline Guide Pat Ferland. Today’s student jumped head first into the Leave No Trace Awareness Trainer class so he can teach LNT to the group he leads for the AMC. We spent the first half inside (at Basecamp) talking about the 7 principles and what they mean, and then we spent the second half outside in the woods around Echo Lake looking at what would make a camp site, how to hang for bags, how to build a small fire that minimizes impact (we did not light any fires, though), and we talked a lot about the how to lesson our impact and groups were with on trail systems anywhere.
He is now ready to teach the ways of LNT! —Pat
