Galeheading to the Twins

The plan was to have our returning guests hike to the AMC’s Galehead Hut, summit Galehead, then return to the hut and stay for the night in anticipation for the next day. The following morning the trio took on a seriously steep trail, heading up the bag South and North Twin Mountains. After that they were going to retrace their steps and head down. Leading this adventure was Redline Guide Debra McCown. Her photos and a short summary follow…

Three Peaks in a Weekend

This returning guest is working on her New Hampshire 48, so when she started talking about day hikes to check peaks off her list around the Pemigewassett Wilderness, I suggested another idea: an overnight at Galehead Hut for a chill, fun experience bagging Galehead and the Twins.

On the first day, we hiked to the hut with our overnight gear and then took minimal day packs to the summit of Galehead before dinner, which is prepared for guests by the ‘Hut Croo.’ We then competed in White Mountain Jeopardy and won some gummy worms!

As we were reminded, July 4th this year marked not only the 250th birthday of our country, but also the 150th birthday of the Appalachian Mountain Club, which operates the huts.

The next day, after breakfast, we headed up to South Twin and North Twin in perfect, sunny summer weather and enjoyed our gummy worms (and the views) on the summits. We then returned to the hut to gather our gear and hike back to the car.

The guest who booked the trip and the friend she brought along, also a returning guest, seemed to enjoy the hut experience as much as I’d hoped! And they were thrilled to bag three peaks in one beautiful summer weekend. —Debra
