Hacky Sack on the Summit

Spring offers up a ton of diversity in the mountains. One day it’s warm and sunny, and the next day looks like winter. Those pesky spring objective hazards await the unwary in shadowy corners. We can’t let down our guard up there during this time (or any time, really). But we can accept Mt Washington — this Beast of the East — during this season, and enjoy all it has to offer. Leading this fun group (whose members wanted to play hacky sack on the summit and talk about zombies on the descent) was Redline Guide Debra McCown.

This dad, teenage son, and two friends decided to take on the challenge of hiking Mt Washington in the spring. It was a nice, snowy day, and they did it! We went up Ammonoosuc Ravine and down Jewell for a classic hiking loop on the Northeast’s highest peak. We didn’t get a lot of views, but it was an awesome adventure, and memories were made. —Debra

Great job, Debra, and congratulations to the team for a hike well done!
