Their End of Summer Peaks

A returning group reached out for a multi-day adventure. The plan went through a few iterations but we ultimately settled upon a Mt Washington hike as the main course, with a side dish of Monroe, and a couple AMC hut overnights at Lakes of the Clouds keeping it civilized. The group was comprised of a mix of youths and adults, the weather cooperated, sunsets and sunrises set the mood, and they all had a great experience. Leading this large group were Redline Guides Debra McCown and Chase Hall. To know more see Debra’s summary and photos.

One kid dreamed that he was climbing a mountain. Another dreamed that she was a mountain — and people were walking on her.

This was apparently their adolescent brains’ way of processing a three-day trip with their families that included hiking two White Mountain peaks: Mt Washington (tallest in the northeast) and nearby Mt Monroe. They shared those dreams on the way down Jewell Trail after three days of good weather and fun hiking with two nights at the Lakes of the Clouds hut.

The group spent the first day of the trip hiking to the hut via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, the second summitting Washington and returning to the hut, and the third hiking down via Jewell Trail. Various members of the group enjoyed bonus hikes to the summit of Monroe, Tuckerman Ravine, and trails exploring the small alpine lakes surrounding the hut.

For members of this 12-person group of families, many of whom were returning guests, the trip marked the end of the kids’ summer break from school with lots of outdoor time and two stunning sunsets.

It’s possible that some core memories were formed here — and we know for sure that the recollection fiery skies above the mountains will last a lifetime. —Debra
