Day Five: The Grand Finale in Crawford Notch

This final day was supposed to find our two guests atop Mt Jackson. But since plans do change, the windy, wetter high-elevation weather suggested something other than Jackson. At the request of our guests for something out of the clouds and drizzle, Jeffery decided to show the two a handful of places that didn’t reach so high into the sky. Places like Arethusa Falls and Bemis Brook, Mt Willard, then Maggie’s Way, one of the new trails described in the 30th edition of the White Mountain Guide.

Speaking of weather, the last few days have been nice, relative to the fact that it hadn’t rained during their visit. But those nice, sunny days, especially yesterday, were hot and a little too humid. Today brought a welcome change. The temperatures were cooler. It was still humid, but without the sun and warmth, it was generally more comfortable. The two were lighter in their hearts because of it having a really comfortable and easy-going final day.

There was nobody there when they arrived!

Nobody around. Unheard of.

On Bemis Brook.

A lovely place.

The yellows are peaking. See the Conway Scenic Railway train on the tracks below?

After Willard they walked along the Saco.

Once done with Maggie’s Run the trio hiked over nine miles!

Guide’s Summary

The past five days spent with Sylvia and Althea has been a truly enjoyable experience. As with any new journey in my life I learn something of value each and every time. Seeing the mountains, lakes, streams and paths from someone else’s view point makes me realize once again what a beautiful place we live in. From the heights of the Presidential to the valleys Maggie’s Run it was fantastic to share those magical places with someone who had not been there before. —Jeffrey Shutak
