If you were to ask a non-hiker what mountains we have in New Hampshire, a common reply might sound like this: “Um, there’s Mt Washington, and, um — are there others?” Being that Mt Washington is the tallest mountain in the Northeast, this stands to reason. That there is access by train and auto furthers this notion. Then there’s the mountain’s infamous weather and how some visitors get caught up in it… sometimes making headlines. Then there’s a whole State Park up there. And events like the bike race. Amid all these factors, it makes sense that one might encounter crowds reaching from the over-flowing overflow parking lots at the base to a slow moving line of people at the summit with an a handful of way of overburdened trails along the way. The term “conga line” applies. This is what Redline Guide Ken Hodges faced while leading two hikers to the top on New England. The did it, though, despite everything.
