He came to us in the eleventh hour, referred by AMC Reservations. A Vermonter who wanted to hike Mt Chocorua and wanted a guide so he didn’t have to go it alone. He asked if we could accommodate his want. We could but we had some questions — particularly since he hadn’t yet filled out our booking form. We asked the normal stuff: experience, fitness, desire, pace, gear, etc. He said he wasn’t going to break any land speed records but that he was no slouch, either. He was experienced and had all the proper stuff. He added that at rest he had an impressive 40 beats-per-minute heart rate. Wow! He also mentioned that he was pretty fit for his age. Of course we followed that comment up with the natural next question: “So just how old are you?” He replied that was “88.” Our response to this was basically in two parts: First, heck yeah, we love it! And second, heck yeah, let’s do this! Redline Guide Chase Hall was available so he led the way taking our octogenarian on one of NH’s most iconic mountains — a member of the 52WAV family of peaks. Here are some photos of the day!
