We are often heard talking about this 4000-footer or that one, or this wilderness or that one, even giving equal time to 25 terrifying trails or those 52 other mountains people like so much. But, every once in a while we’ll slip in some trip in the Mahoosucs or something wild like it. For those who don’t know, the 32~ mile Mahoosuc Range is tough, rugged, slippery, muddy, and stunningly beautiful. It is also the route the Appalachian Trail (AT) takes as it links New Hampshire with Maine. The north-bound (NoBo) survivors of NH now only have Maine to deal with. And for south-bounders (SoBo), well, let’s just say the fun’s just getting started.
This multiday backpack, a “NoBo” effort, was led by Redline Guide Arlette Laan. With her, a single guest, a section hiker, wanted company on this range, particularly for a one-mile section that some thru-hikers declare is the toughest mile on the AT — others declare it’s the most fun mile. As is always the case, it’s all a matter of perspective. Speaking on which, check out Arlette’s perspective thru her photos.
