Galehead and the Twins

The title identifies the objectives of our oft-returning guest working on his GRID (hiking all those 4ks every month of the year), but the order differs in that Redline Guide Chase Hall and guest started with North Twin. They then traversed over to South Twin before dropping down the Devil’s Staircase (yeah, we just made up that name) to go for the much shorter Galehead. This […]

Another Women’s-Only Intro

The fall is one of the best times of the year to get out and learn the ins and outs of backpacking. For those new to this activity, doing it during the best time of year helps sell the sport by providing the best memories. Redline Guide Arlette Laan knows this well. She loves teaching this class throughout the season but doing it in the fall […]

Pass the JAM

Three mountains — major summits in the Northern Presidentials — make up what is known as the “JAM.” The summits being Jefferson, Adams, and Madison. It is these three summits that one oft-returning guest wanted and completed with Redline Guide Chase Hall. Though “wanted” may not be the word this Gridder actually used. When hiking all of the 48 4000-footers in every month, the spoken word […]

Try for the Tris

Those in the know — the hikers that hike NH’s 48 4000-footers — will understand that “Tris” in our shortened title will refer to the Tripyramids. There are three such peaks bearing that name, all over 4000-feet, though thanks to the 200-foot prominence rule only two actually count: Middle and North. The purpose of this hike was so our returning guest could snag those two peaks. […]

Autumn Peak Camping

Biting insects and hot, humid weather used to occupy many of our thoughts. They have been replaced, much to our delight. Now we’re better able to take note of the positive superlatives. For example: it’s cooler and, barring a little rain now and then, drier. The biting insects have for all practical purposes, vanished. And the mostly green visuals have tuned into a kaleidoscope of fall […]

SAR Intro Course Added

A New SAR Intro Course has been added — check it out! The recent SAR Intro Course we just taught was so well received we spent the day tweaking the in-house course outline to make it even better, finishing up the entry on our site, adding it to our educational offerings page as well as to our site navigation and booking form. We’ve now gone live […]

Mixing It Up

We had four days to dedicate to variety and variety is what we gave. Items included hiking Mts Flume and Liberty, an overnight at the Liberty Spring Tentsite, strolling along the Franconia bike path, visiting the Basin, camping at Franconia Brook Tentsite, heading over to Artists Bluff after some rain. And more (rain)… it’s all a blur now. But fun was definitely had, despite said rain. […]

Say Hello to SAR

A southern New Hampshire group of homeschoolers approached us wanting an introduction to the world of Search and Rescue (SAR). The parents felt this would be a good topic with which their students could broaden their horizons. Collectively we have a wealth of experience and we were all for it figuring in the worst case it would at least deepen their understanding of such matters. And […]

Almost Done with Isolation

For anyone who follows along with our myriad blog posts, you’ll probably know that Redline Guide Chase Hall has been accompanying one fellow with his GRID (you know, accounting for the 48 4000-footers every month of the year). If you are, then you’ll also see Mt Isolation (4004′) coming up a lot. So much so that our guest is almost done “Gridding out” that particular peak. […]

A.T. Objective

Sometimes our guests want a mountain and sometimes our guests want a trail. On this adventure — one that employed both our guided backpacking and portering services — our guest was looking for the latter. Specifically she desired stringing together a section of the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) through the state. It’s a cool objective, one we’re happy to help with. On lead for this trip was […]

A No-Madison JAM

Jefferson, Adams, and Madison. Hiking these three Northern Presidential peaks makes what the NH hiking community refers to as a J.A.M. But when a returning guest comes to us already having hiked Madison and asks if we’ll guide the remaining two, our natural response is JA, of course, Jefferson and Adams it is (numbers two and three by height on the 4000-footers list). Leading this hike […]

First on the List

Welcome to New Hampshah. That’s what we say to our guest vacationing here from Wisconsin and taking on her first 4000-footer: Mt Pierce. She sure picked a good day for her indoctrination. As Redline Guide Chase Hall put it… […] Beautiful weather, no wind, and the temperatures made for a really awesome day. The colors of the leaves are starting to lose that green, giving way […]
