A returning guest signed up for an epic adventure with us requesting Redline Guide Arlette Laan to be her guide. Arlette was more than happy to help. The objective, a Southern Presidential Traverse. We’ll let Arlette tell the best parts.
A returning guest wanted to see what a Presidential Traverse would be like. Having previously day hiked up to Mount Washington she wanted a fuller experience and we suggested including hut stays and a ridge walk. A first night at Mizpah Hut allowed for a leisurely hike up the first day and we loved the green mosses and beginnings of fall colors. Never having stayed at an AMC hut before, our guest discovered and enjoyed the food and hot cocoa luxuries, and the antics of the Croo.
The next day started off with the challenging climb up to Mount Pierce with unfortunately no views. As the day progressed however, the clouds blew through enough to see the mountain peaks. ‘Blowing through’ being the operative word here. The wind was gusting adding a wind chill and unsteadiness to the hike. We heard word of a ten year old being blown over and we had to brace ourselves to prevent the same fate. Hand warmers and mittens came out and hoods were secured to retain body heat.
Slightly battered but proud we made it to the Lakes of the Clouds hut where thankfully more hot cocoa was waiting for us. The next day we headed down the challenging Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to land safely back on non rocky ground in the afternoon. Well done! —Arlette
