WMNF Exploration

A couple of folks from Switzerland reached out wanting to check out some of what the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) has to offer. While we have a large number of cool adventure objectives to share, we decided one in particular would be a great match for this initial trip. They hope to return with others in the future — and hopefully we are asked to share other objectives at that time.

What we decided on was a Zealand Notch Traverse. This would be a more relaxed offering giving up many of the goods along the way, such as: two waterfalls, three streams, four ponds, easy access trails and bridges, plus sweeping views and changing foliage. And more (see below). There’s a lot to like. Leading this trip was Redline Guide Debra McCown.

We took them on a chill overnight backpacking adventure, experiencing the woods, waters, and scenic mountain views along a gentle stretch of trail and overnighting at a developed tentsite. They got to enjoy the changing leaves and view a sunset and stars over a scenic pond — and learn some skills like how to filter water and how we handle food in the backcountry to protect humans and wildlife. We look forward to working with them on more outdoor adventures in the future! —Debra
