They — whoever “they” are — say the mountains will be there another day. This is good because people don’t always succeed on their hikes and some need to come back to finish what they started on another day. It’s a reality. For them the mountains need to be there when they return. This hike was one such endeavor. The ambitious plan was compete a one-day Classic Presidential Traverse. What actually happened was a JAM (Jefferson, Adams, Madison) — though this one was in reverse taking on Madison to start the day (with a sunrise on the trail). The problem with the Northern Presidentials is that they can be very slow-going thanks to the jumbled, difficult, rocky terrain. By the time they summited Jefferson the writing was on the wall: It wasn’t going to happen so they bailed exiting the range via Caps Ridge Trail.
