The call came in from an assistant for the founder of a security company in New York. Her boss — an experienced White Mountain National Forest hiker — was looking for a good hike with some third class terrain on which to scramble. While actual third class terrain is not very common in the WMNF which offers mostly 2nd class scrambles and 5th class climbs, we did have some thoughts on the matter and decided on the Baldface Circle Loop Trail. While it’s not actually third class terrain (which is mostly found on very limited parts of the Huntington Ravine, Six Husbands, and Mt Tripyramids Trails) it is extensive in its offerings with lots of scrambly fun to be had, and it’s a really pretty loop off the beaten path, so to speak. As it turned out, this was a great choice and our guest was pleased summiting three 52 WAV peaks: South Baldface, North Baldface, and Eagle Crag.
