Some folks, inquisitive as they may be, will pick up a new hobby and run with it during which they’ll potentially make every mistake in the book — some innocuous, some not so much. This is pretty common, too, if one pays attention to folks meeting at trailheads — water bottles in hand, shenanigans afoot. This phase of embracing the sport of hiking can take months or even years to complete. And even then there’s still so much to learn along this seemingly never ending curve.
Our job, if you will, is to flatten this learning curve and we do so by offering a current-season-specific Hiking Introduction course. Our students partaking in this course can shave off a couple of years right from the start with the end-result being better technique, more accurate planning, less risk to themselves and others, reduced impact, a greater overall understanding, and a higher level of enjoyment.
Taking this course to get ahead of the curve and be safer is what one young couple from Massachusetts decided to do. Teaching this part indoor, part on-mountain full day class was led by Redline Guide Mike Cherim. For the afternoon portion they took on and summited Whitehorse Ledge. Here are some photos of the afternoon…
