At age 15 our guest’s mother reached out hoping we could lead her son on a summit sunrise on Mt Washington. The forecast warned of very strong winds and cold temps so we told the two of them that summiting anything above treeline would be very unlikely. That said, we were willing to try knowing that at worst the experience would be out of this world for this young man. The objective would be the Lakes of the Clouds hut. The mom was okay with that. And while we’re sure the son really wanted to summit, safety had to come first. To this he was resigned, willing at accept the lesson and the reality of the mountains. And also there is the oft-spoken saying that “the mountain will be there another day.” One small thing stood in our way: due to our Youth Protection Policy, meaning no one-on-one with minors, either an adult family member would need to join us or we’d need to assign a second guide.
