Maine’s 100 Mile Wilderness

First a little background taken from Wikipedia: The Hundred-Mile Wilderness is a section of the Appalachian Trail in the state of Maine running between Monson and Abol Bridge over the West Branch of the Penobscot River just south of Baxter State Park. It is generally considered the most remote section of the Appalachian Trail, and one of the most challenging to navigate and traverse. This section of the trail is crossed by several logging roads and is maintained by the Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC). It consists of a small corridor of protected wilderness surrounded by large tracts of public and private land controlled by paper companies.

Now that you know what it is, here’s how we fit in: Guiding thru- and section-hikers through New Hampshire and Maine is something we’ve helped with a few times. Mostly under the watchful eye of Redline Guide Arlette Laan thanks to her being ultra-experienced both in the lay of the land, and with thru-hiking in general. Once again she was tasked to help a returning guest accomplish her goals. What follows is a short summary and a bunch of photos of the trip.

Five days in the 100 Mile Wilderness

After spending 26 years section hiking the Appalachian Trail, our guest is ready to wrap it up! She wanted a little companion ship for the last backpacking section in the 100 Mile Wilderness after having successfully day hiked the rest of it. A good time was had by all and now she’s ready to tackle the big K! Mount Katahdin that is… to be continued! —Arlette

Awesome lead, Arlette, and to our guest, great work getting it done! Thanks for adventuring with Redline Guiding!
