A fellow came to us looking to book a backpacking trip, a simple overnight, for him and two of his friends. They didn’t have a great deal of experience so we created a sort of entry-level offering. Due to the Labor Day weekend we figured everything would be swamped with people, the trails busy, and parking a challenge. Inasmuch we started on Friday and tried to think outside the box a little in terms of where we’d go. What we came up with was to lead this trio to Roger’s Ledge — which was added to the 52 With A View list back in 2020. It was a great choice: Nobody was around, the weather cooperated (after a band of showers passed), parking was easy, the views were amazing, and the approach is rather moderate. Leading the trio was Redline Guide Debra McCown. The team accessed the ledge via the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, where they topped off the water at the second crossing, and the following day they took Mill Brook Trail out (see footnote).
Great job, Debra, and to our trio of friends, well done. It looks like it was an awesome experience!
Footnote: Of interest, perhaps, Redline Guiding owner Mike Cherim used to work for the Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) when he was 15. He and other youths were housed in the cabins behind the fish hatchery. One of their many projects was to re-vamp the Mill Brook Trail.
