Sunrise Canceled

A new guest came to us with a two part objective. First of all he wanted to summit Mt Washington. Second, he wanted to lay eyes on Hillman’s Highway and other lines as he plans to ski the Ravine in the near future. Originally the hike was slated to be a summit-at-sunrise epic. Unfortunately the weather didn’t really cooperate due to a wet forecast with high winds. For safety’s sake, Redline Guide Perry Flowers opted for a later start. Here’s his report followed by a number of photos.

Our original plan was to make the summit for sunrise, with an alpine start of 1AM. Rain, low visibility, and winds approaching the century mark led to us scrap those plans and push our start back until 7AM. We were still facing rain, fog, and high winds as we approached the bottom of the ravine, but knowing that it was supposed to clear up around 10AM, our goal became managing our pace to top out on the headwall once the weather had moved through. This paid off, and we were treated to a beautiful day up to the summit and down Lion Head. Our guest’s goal was to get beta on some of the ski lines around Tucks, and we were able to get a great view into the ravine to get eyes on some potential winter objectives. —Perry
