Snow-Covered Shoulder

The “shoulder seasons” — one in the spring and one in the fall — demarcate winter and summer, but do not do so with an exacting edge, to be sure. One day it’s warmish and sunny, on next day it’s socked-in and rainy, and then you have one of those ridiculous May snowstorms. Our guests didn’t ask for this, but they did clear treeline on the Ammo and get to marvel at the snow and rime ice all the way to the summit of Mt Washington. Apparently, the couple, hailing from Houston, Texas, loved it, rightfully proud of their accomplishment. They waited on the summit for a while enjoying their time as they waited for their reserved train (via the Cog Railway). On lead for this was new Redline Guide Bethany Bourget. On the ride down — courtesy of our guests — she grabbed a seat, looked out the window during the descent, reflecting on the day in her new office. What follows are a few observations along with some photos and videos.

It was wild, very wet, and once we cleared the last water crossing higher up we were in the thick of it. I taught them how to correctly use poles, spikes, and the trick with non water proof boots: dry socks, so I put their feet in freezer Ziplocs with toe warmers and they were good to go. everybody that passed us turned around at the hut. We gathered in the ‘dungeon’ to eat and regroup with my plan. There were only two others ahead of us who headed up Washington. winds were going at a good clip and then visibility dropped substantially. we could only make out one cairn or two at a time. The guests were in great spirits and so very thankful and humbled. They pushed hard and did so well! i checked on them constantly for warmth and energy and they crushed it! —Bethany

Great first lead, Beth. And to our guests, great job making it happen. Thanks for choosing Redline Guiding!
