One of the most demanding classes we offer in terms of depth and complexity is our Wilderness Navigation course — ours is not a dumbed-down offering by any means. The “click” from our students’ understanding does occur, but it is definitely hard won. But when that happens, however, it’s immensely satisfying, both for us and our students. We do finish up the class giving homework, which we are happy to support both in offering teaching materials and also ourselves in terms of our time by phone, text, or whatever works. In the end, despite these efforts, the knowledge is extremely perishable. Inasmuch we try to create natural and practical uses allowing student to actually implement what they’ve learned. Like our last class, this course was also offered to members of the Pemi Valley Hikers. This most recent class — which ran a little differently due to time (or a lack thereof) and weather, was led by Redline Guides Mike Cherim and Chase Hall.
