It’s been said that doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results is a sign of insanity. But not always. Sometimes doing the same thing over and over again eventually leads to success. That was the case on this trip. The oft-returning couple had done all sorts of cool things with us, but one thing kept eluding them. That one thing was to summit Mt Washington in the winter. We all know the weather up there can be nuts, and this couple kept running into it keeping them from their goal. But that was about to change.
All week we watched the weather. Snow, frigid temps, and high winds, dominated the forecast. But, there was a small gap. Granted the snow, frigid temps, and high winds never went away, but if you squinted, covering one eye with your hand, a gap could be seen. A small space of time where the winds were going to drop to highway speeds and would seem to allow for a successful summit for the courageous and the determined. It would be tough, and the cold would to be at center stage, but it looked doable.
The couple, almost frustrated by this difficult mountain, were stoked and ready to try again. This was the result of optimism and maybe some insanity. Leading them this time was Redline Guide Glenn Van Neil. They fought hard for it, dealing with everything the mountain chose to throw at them, but this time the curse was broken. The couple along with their guide stood atop the mountain that continually showcases the world’s worst weather. What follows are a few photos of their successful albeit crazy ordeal.
