The Icing on the Cake

Every year there is a celebration of ice climbing in the Mt Washington Valley. It’s aptly named Ice Fest. People come from all over to attend workshops to hone their skills, partake in classes and climbing adventures, explore the mountains and local sites of interest, hike and ski, attend presentations and other fun events, and partake in various related activities. It’s a great event and a fantastic way to advance the sport of ice climbing thrusting it into the limelight. If we had to name a downside to it all, however, it’d be the crowds vying for places to climb. While there are a vast number of frozen seepages and ice-locked waterfalls in the area, the number is finite. We had to really think about some of the possibilities when deciding where to take our students. Fortunately Redline Guide Will Murphy was able to locate some decent ice in Crawford Notch, specifically the Silver Cascade. While we seldom make blog posts detailing our educational offerings, we just had to post about this three-student Ice Climbing Intro. What follows are some terrific photos of the day.

Find lead, Will, and to our class, great work out there! Looks like you had an excellent day!
