Two Frosty Days

Day one was a mixed group adding to a “joinableMountaineering Skills training day. Day two, involving only the person who initially created the day one event, was a quasi-mountaineering experience — specifically taking on the Osceolas. On point for both days was Redline Guide Debra McCown with Mike Cherim shadowing on day one only. The training on day one, despite taking place in a snow-starved valley, went very well, including some self-arrest training that actually happened with the best conditions of the season so far.

After Sunday’s Mountaineering Skills class, our guest was eager to practice freshly learned skills and check two 4000-footers off his winter list on Monday. His objective: East Osceola via the Mt Osceola Trail from Greeley Ponds — a route on which one may navigate an infamous rock chimney (or opt to by-pass it).

He said he had a blast using an ice axe and crampons to climb the steep, snowy, icy trail up and down and appreciated how secure it felt using these tools rather than microspikes and trekking poles.

At the chimney, there were three options: climb the icy rock chimney itself, scramble up (and down) the snowy rock bypass, or hike the bypass around the bypass. He chose the snowy rock scramble, wisely putting on a helmet for safety before adding a legit rock scramble to the list of things he did during his first day using crampons in the wild.

It was a beautiful blue sky and sunshiny winter day — and he got both summits plus a whole lot of practice on steep terrain. A fun and successful day all around! —Debra
