Flexing our flexibility is sometimes what we have to do. Flipping the safety switch, as needed. Here’s what happened: A returning guest reached out, so stoked about her recent winter hiking experience with us that she wanted to do it all again. This time, though, she also wanted to introduce her husband to the sport. Since Redline Guide Chase Hall led her last time, he was a natural for this round as well. There was some concern initially, about winter no longer being winter and all, as she wanted her husband to have an experience like her first one. But we know that that gem of a season has many facets. This was but one — and it’s still winter.
Based on Chase’s report, the team initially hoped to grab Willey, Field, and Tom, though not necessarily in that order. They started up Avalon Trail to the first crossing. With the rain and recent warm temperatures they knew the crossing would be tough, but they managed it. This was in part thanks to community help coming to the aid as one hiker gave Chase and crew some useful beta. The next crossing, however, which should have theoretically been smaller/easier just looked too dangerous.
Chase decided to pull the plug for safety reasons but suggested a pretty little loop on the other side of the highway. The team grabbed Mts Jackson and Webster (the latter of 52WAV fame) having themselves a fun experience. It was tough. Trail conditions at all, but smiles were passed around throughout the day… as you’ll see in some of the photos Chase grabbed:
