It’s not too hard, it’s not too soft, it’s not too hot, it’s not too cold… it’s all juuust right!
A couple from New Brunswick, Canada, came to us hoping to do some winter hiking or snowshoeing. They were newer than new to the sport having no experience at all. While we do formally train people to hike, this couple opted to just get out there with a guide and do something that would take them about 3 hours, more or less. Nothing too technical, but also, because “it’s good to feel alive,” nothing too tame, either.
Redline Guide Mike Cherim decided to lead them up to Whitehorse Ledge via Bryce Path. Those who know this trail will recall the steep sections and the stairs. This area can be a little sketchy with its higher consequences thanks to some exposure, but he felt that should offer the right mix. We made sure they had layers, spikes, poles, and food and water. Mike carried the other items they might need, like headlamps, and more layers they could use. He also carried some rope if wanted for reassurance (it was used once). It was a go.
They caravanned to Cathedral Ledge, parked, then hiked. At the junction in the col between the peaks the team went left towards the Whitehorse Ledge ledges and summit. The sun came out bright and strong just as the team made it to the top. How fortunate. It didn’t last, though, and they didn’t stay. They re-traced their steps until they reached the junction in the col again. From there they opted to head up to Cathedral Ledge itself, summiting both mountains, and either take the road down or the climber’s path. They opted for the latter.
Truth be told, when they first saw the spikes come out trepidation was high. They wondered what in the heck (or other words, maybe) they had signed up for. Were they going to die?! By the end of the hike they really appreciated both the spikes and poles. They made the hike a lot safer and easier, and they ramped up their confidence simultaneously, making the whole thing a lot more fun ad rewarding. All-in-all, initial misgivings aside, the couple had a terrific time and really enjoyed the stunning views. They plan to come back, in fact. Maybe to check out some of the mountains Mike pointed to. Here are a few photos of the tour.
