We are a smart, well-rounded, and versatile group of guides and will often go above and beyond offering more than the standard Outdoor Adventures, Wilderness Education, and Mountain Top and Wilderness Wedding officiation. This page is devoted to that versatility and hopes to identify and describe some of these other services. Do note, please, that this is page is not complete. It is growing and developing as you, our guests, create yet more opportunities for us to serve you. In truth, we didn’t open our doors with these services in mind. They came to be because you asked us if we could help with this, that, or the other thing. You asked for our companionship, our strength, and our skills, and us, with our can-do, attitude, said yes.

Portering Services

Description

We’ll carry your gear. Literally. Some popular day hiking trips, mountains on the 4000-footer list, for example, require hikers to trek great distances. People that attempt some of these hikes — the Bonds, etc. — are sometimes better served by breaking these day hikes into multi-day backpacks. But that introduces a new problem: pack weight. Instead of a more normal 15-20 pound summer pack weight, people end up toting around something closer to 30-40 pounds. For some, it’s simply too much. But there’s no need to throw in the towel on the effort and give up your goals. We can help.

How It Works

What we do is have you meet with us, collect and approve your gear (i.e., we will not carry your favorite ten-pound sleeping bag from 1979 or your oversized car-camping tent from Walmart). After approved we will carry your gear to the requested legal camp site — see camping rules (PDF) — and set it up. When you arrive your tent will be erected, pad inflated, and sleeping bag laid out, and if we carried food, it will be stored properly. The specifics may vary from trip to trip. The following morning we come back, break down your site, and either move it to a new location or pack it out. We have performed this service a few times now and it works.

Pricing Info

For pricing, this service follows our Backpacking pricing schedule for the first person typically as we will ordinarily assign only one porter to every one to two portering guests, depending on how much gear needs to be carried — there are reasonable TOTAL limits — sixty (60) pounds — to this service as our guides are humans, not pack animals. Do note that portering is not guiding. The porter will generally not hike with, lead, or instruct the guest but rather travel in advance of the guest.

2D/1N Porter Service Pricing
For one person $550
For two people* $325 each
Add Day/Night Porter Service Pricing

*Note: Two person pricing will only apply if the TOTAL carry weight is less than sixty (60) pounds and is deemed packable and manageable by a single guide. If not, the one-person one-on-one pricing is in effect. Please contact us if you have questions. Also note: The “sixty (60) pounds TOTAL weight” includes the guide’s own gear.

Gear Rescue/Recovery Services

Description

This is a pretty unique service, another that you came up with. You dropped your pack off a cliff — over $1000 worth of gear — and to retrieve it seemed way too risky, not wanting to add loss of life to the overall cost of this terrible and unfortunate accident. True story. If this happens to you, while noting that this is extremely unlikely, you now have someone you can call. Our guides can rescue/recover your lost gear provided it is findable. We cannot guarantee it’ll be in good shape, but if we can locate it, we can bring it home and reunite you with it, for better or for worse.

How It Works

Whoops, the dog knocked if off the cliff, the wind took it, or it simply tumbled into oblivion bouncing into the abyss. You can’t see it, but you know it’s down there. You mark your location recording as much information as possible: 1) For how long did this object fall? 2) Did you hear it hit/bounce? 3) Where was it sitting, precisely? You describe the scene with as much detail as possible so that our guides with their technical climbing know-how are as prepared as possible to make their attempt a success.

Pricing Info

This service requires some specialized knowledge and specific technical gear like ropes and will be billed based on this presumption. We incorporate a “Danger Tax” into certain activities, like climbing, to further compensate our guides for their extended gear list and for the expensive formal training they must undergo.

One day operation $325

Undetermined added costs? Case by case variability

Note: It is important to note that there are No Guarantees that our guides will locate your gear or be able to recover it in one piece. There are too many variables. There are locations deep amid the krummholz that could be literally impossible to reach even with technical support or otherwise without causing environmental damage.

LNT Group Awareness

Description

Appreciating the outdoors and protecting it go hand in hand. That’s why this class is so important for those who embrace and use the resource. These people must become its stewards. And to become so, one must know and understand the Seven Principles on LNT (Leave No Trace). As trained by LNT.org, our Master and Awareness-Level Trainers are prepared to make an individual or a large group LNT aware in this engaging presentational-style class. Taught outdoors under most conditions, but due to the nature of the material, teaching this class online like our Virtual Classes, is possible.

Easy “Tourist” Tours

Description

Not everything we do is hardcore. There are so many cool places to go, both visited and generally unvisited, and we know where they are. If, for example, you want an easy tour offering up several waterfalls or other water-based points of interest, we can show you around. These tours will generally require you have transportation as its possible several locations will be visited during any given tour. Accessibility will range from spots that will allow rough but doable wheelchair access to fairly easy, short-distanced, slow-paced hikes (sometimes on rough terrain), but we will discuss this when you reach out.

How It Works

We meet at an agreed-upon location — probably at our Basecamp or at your lodging — and caravan from there (we don’t have a bus, yet) driving to our first of many or only destination of the day, depending on the plan. Generally these things last for 2-3 hours on average, but shorter or longer tours are available. As custom providers, the day is yours so much of this is “to be determined.” Reach out ant we will discuss the options. We have actually done several of these sorts of tours (here’s one, a Pinkham Notch example, we did recently for two people)

Pricing Info

The variability of this service is high since we can offer such varied tours, both in terms of accessibility, intensity, and duration. Often, due to the nature of the area, we will easily spend 2-3 hours with our guests so our pricing is based on that. Shorter and longer duration tours are subject to adjustment and/or negotiation.

Companion Services

Description

For several years folks have been hiring us to guide them on certain adventures where the consequences, the remoteness, the lack of navigability, and/or the inherent dangers of a particular activity suggests one doesn’t go it alone. Often times, we have learned, is that it is a worrying spouse of SO that insists on hiring us (and we’re okay with that). The hikers we are “leading” in these cases are very often quite experienced and perfectly capable, but are simply playing it safe/smart. We have led AMC leaders on winter hikes for this very reason. We’re like insurance.

More Companion Service Details - Click to Open

How It Works

What we do is simply no different than if we are guiding a regular hike or backpack with a guest or group. We will coordinate with our guests regarding the planning and preparation, and help manage most of the logistics ourselves or instructing otherwise. Noting the route, weather, and everything we typically do when leading a hike. As per our norm, once a guide is assigned he or she will coordinate directly with you.

Pricing Info

For pricing, this service follows either our Hiking or Backpacking pricing schedules (see tables below), depending on the number of days, location, and if it’s meant to be a backpack or hike, etc. If, for example, the trip is in Maine, Vermont, or New York, additional day/night charges will apply for travel.

Anywhere Adventures

Description

We love New Hampshire, but New Hampshire’s not all that we know. We obviously lead trips to wherever people want to go (and we know), and we’ve led in some wild places, to be sure, and even helped folks with sections of the AT, so we want to remind our readers that we can do pretty much anything in the Northeast: In Maine (Rangeley, 100-Mile Wilderness, Baxter/Katahdin, Acadia); In Vermont (4000-footers, Long Trail); In New York (Adirondacks, Catskills); and of course in New Hampshire — our stomping grounds — where we own and pretty much anything goes.

More Anywhere Adventures Details - Click to Open

How It Works

Basically, if you want to do it, we probably have someone on the team ready, willing, and able to take you. This will probably not be your most economical option, but working with us, we’re told, is great. Our guides are a cut above and what our guests get out of it far exceeds the dollars and cents spent.

Pricing Info

We bill out travel by car within the region as noted. One day in most of Vermont and the Rangeley area in western Maine will require one-half day of travel each way and one overnight — thus a single day would be billed like a 2D/1N backpack. Points beyond like Baxter State Park (Katahdin, ME), Acadia, and the Adirondacks will require one full day of travel and two overnights — thus a single day would be billed like a 3D/2N backpack.

Use this table if requesting a companion for a multi-day tour.
