High in the Middle

This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. —John Muir, 1838-1914, Father of the National Parks

They say Mt Washington is home to the world’s worst weather. Yet we sense joy in the photo… hmm.

Redline Guide Phoebe Seltzer loving her job.

High (hi) in the middle is how they describe the State of Ohio, but really we’re high in the middle here in New Hampshire. Literally. Which maybe is why people from Ohio love to visit the White Mountain National Forest — at least we see a lot. It’s familiar in that way, perhaps. Kidding aside, we do host a number of folks from Ohio and this recent multi-day tour led by Redline Guide Phoebe Seltzer is no exception. The plans changed up along the way, the number of days decreased while the number of people doubled going from three days of hiking for one person to one day for one person with a second day for two people thrown in. Whew!

Day one was a hiking tour of some of our more popular 4000-footers, namely Mt Eisenhower (4760′), Mt Pierce (4312′), and Mt Jackson (4052′). The weather was perfect. Sunny and nice. Day two (a few days later) was Mt Washington (6288′). The weather was also perfect on the second day minus the rain and strong winds. We say perfect because it is on many levels. Rugged trails make us appreciate easier ones, and rough mountain weather changes our perspective, but doesn’t kill our spirit. Don’t believe us? Note the smiles on our guests’ faces in the photos accompanying this post.
